Ch-ch-ch-changes

"It is remarkable how easily and insensibly we fall into a particular route, and make a beaten track for ourselves … How worn and dusty, then, must be the highways of the world, how deep the roots of tradition and conformity." -Henry David Thoreau

As I near the 2-year mark of High Maintenance Machine, I can't help but think of where I want to take my comics. And to be honest with myself, it isn’t into another year of diary comics. I never intended to draw a diary comic this long--it just happened. And while I did sometimes lose sight of my original purpose, the strip was always about drawing practice, about pushing my art and myself into new places.

So beginning August 5th I will be changing things up: I'm going to focus on longer stories--both true and fictional, about myself and others--rather than daily diary strips about my life. And because I feel that long-form comics work better in print, I will stop regularly posting pages online. Each month, a new issue of High Maintenance Machine will be released, either as a compilation of stories or a chapter in a longer work. We'll see. I'm not sure what this will look like, or where it will go, but it's a place I have to visit, and I hope you'll come along for the ride.

Thanks,

Matthew

That's right, don't rest on those laurels! I like the diary strips but am glad to see you expanding. I had a similar experience with Before Sleep - it was intended as an exercise (alas, it was not quite as successful as yours at building productive habits), and after about 2 years it felt constraining and I needed to move on. I was doing other comics at the same time, but then so have you.

With such a clean breaking point, maybe a book collection or two of diary strips might appear at some point?

I think this is great news Matt! As much as I love HMM, I think you are ready to push yourself and do something different (and I love your fictional comics). Hooray!

I was one of those encouraging you last year to continue, but this year making a change seems like the right move. I love my daily HMM, but as an artist you've clearly gotten what you wanted out of the experience of that grind.

I can't wait to see what you will come up with. Good luck!

(I still need to re-up my subscription with you!)

Dude, I wish I could be as gracious as the rest of these folks who are patting you on the back, but I CAN'T STAND the idea that you're stopping. Dammit!! You're the reason I started doing a daily. It's like you're committing diary suicide. I think I have a help line you can call. I know I have the number somewhere here......
